In an extraordinary victory for the people, the Trump Administration has announced that it is fully withdrawing its massive anti-democratic plan to block free speech and assembly through proposed regulations that would have crushed protest on federal land in the nation's capital.

President Trump’s pick to lead the National Park Service will appear on Thursday before a U.S. Senate Committee to be questioned as to his fitness to serve as director, including whether he will withdraw the new anti-protest rules proposed by the Trump Administration and Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke.

The Trump Administration is taking action to shut down protests in Washington, D.C.

Tell your Senators how important it is to you that they demand that nominee David Vela state unequivocally that he will rescind the new proposed regulations.

Over 140,000 people resoundingly opposed this outrageous effort to eviscerate the cherished right to protest in the nation's capital, submitting formal comments to the National Park Service by October 15, 2018.

Now it's time to urge the Senate to reflect this public opposition in their inquiry to Mr. Vela.

New proposed rules would impose steep fees and costs on demonstrations in Washington, D.C; effectively ban protests on the iconic White House sidewalk; force protesters to pay the costs of barricades erected at police discretion, park officials wages and overtime, and harm to grass from standing on it; create waiting periods removing any obligation of the government to promptly process or approve permits; restrict and suppress spontaneous demonstrations that respond to breaking events; create hair-triggers allowing police to end protests for the most minor of issues; restrict sound and staging; ban long term vigils or protest presences; make protesters pay for expensive "turf covers," among many other radical restrictions of free speech rights.

People across the United States have made it clear that they are not going to sit back and allow their First Amendment rights to be eviscerated.

PCJF Op-Ed in the Washington Post: Trump admin wants to tax protests. What happened to free speech?

Posted in Press Coverage · August 14, 2018 1:36 PM
For the first time, the U.S. government wants demonstrators to pay to use our parks, sidewalks and streets to engage in free speech in the nation’s capital. This is a bold effort by the Trump administration to burden and restrict access to public spaces for First Amendment activities in Washington. If enacted, it would fundamentally alter participatory democracy in America. Read more
